Google measures the households with PowerMeter

Google is planning a new software that will help us to monitor the consumption of electricity in our homes, and perhaps also to save energy: PowerMeter, this is his name, we will see in real time how much electricity we are consuming, and will be iGoogle integrated into the platform. According to the company, this software allows us to reduce energy waste by up to 15 percent.

Users can access the iGoogle platform, and then create a custom page containing small PowerMeter The Web-based applications will give an overview of granular real-time, all devices that use electricity in our house.

For now PowerMeter is only a prototype: Google users can choose to use it or not, and Google is committed not to disclose personal information to major energy companies.

Most consumers do not know the data on their energy consumption, nor cares, as said Ed Lu, one of superingegneri Google.

The PowerMeter take the data from so-called smart meters, able to estimate the amount of energy used by our devices. Worldwide there are about 40 million, but this number is expected to increase in coming years, and according to Lu could reach 100 million.

Google will display the data as graphs. You can see the energy of the day today compared with that of the previous day, or allow us to see the data on the long term.

Google also plan to make public PowerMeter API, to allow other developers to build applications connected to it. There are also ongoing agreements with major energy companies: Google says the data already collected by the detectors should be made available to you in real time, in a non-proprietary format, and managers seem to be oriented to give it exactly in this form.

For now PowerMeter has been tested privately by some Google employees at home: an employee, for example, found that an appliance was left on all night, threatening to go short and create a fire.

But according to you, PowerMeter is it really necessary?

Testing Chrome, Google Browser

Testing Chrome, Google Browser

When they seem to know certain stability in the long struggle between browsers, Google breaks the pattern, with its own in direct competition with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Opera.

Google Chrome is a new browser open source, the last of a family nurtured. Developed with discretion and promoted by a comic, Chrome is based on a philosophy somewhat different to other browsers.

Starting from the facility, we asked what we want to import browser settings, if we want to be the default and where we want shortcuts. Done this, Google Chrome is running like a bullet and welcomes us with a pleasant interface, clear and minimalist.

In a gesture of fair play, Chrome question just started if we want to keep Google as default search engine (with a huge button to keep Google by default, yes). He then takes us to the home page, the command center of the browser. Dynamically sized, ordered the home page information intelligently: Several screenshots show the most visited sites, and boxes on the right give access to the history and bookmarks. It is the "command center" of Chrome.

Start browsing the other hand, could not be simpler: just type words into the address bar and Chrome will suggest results directly from Google instead of using only the history and bookmarks. If you want a little more discretion may activate the "incognito", which leaves no traces on the computer (useful if you are on a shared computer.) Holding the mouse over the scroll button displays the history of pages, one for each tab.

El simpatico modo Incognito

The tabs are distributed along the upper edge of the screen, freeing up space for content, as already happens in Firefox and Internet Explorer by pressing the F11 key. Each tab runs as a separate process, with its space individual memory. Using the Chrome Task Manager can be observed in real time using the processor and memory of the loaded pages, and clicking on "Statistics" shows even more detailed data.

This ensures improved performance and security with tabs that can not interfere with each other and a browser that does not have to croak when we opened eight web applications at the same time.

By default, the session is not saved when closing the browser. Chrome to remember the mess of tabs open we just go to Options and choose the restore. The other options (Basic, Specific and Advanced) are just as easy to customize.

If you do not want to start with blank browser can import settings from Firefox or Internet Explorer. The results are excellent. The transition from other browsers could not be more simple (which makes sense, considering market shares at stake).

El administrador de tareas de Google Chrome

To display pages, Chrome uses WebKit, the rendering engine of Safari and Konqueror, and the truth is that the visual quality has nothing to envy of other browsers. With regard to CSS support, the test goes smoothly Acid2.

For loading scripts, choose Chrome V8, certainly a good name for a motor even Javascript.

The combination of WebKit and V8 is designed to optimize performance in the face of complex applications of web 2.0, based on Javascript or Gears. Results are already indicating that leaves the competition at the level of polish:

If you encounter sites that contain malicious code Chrome will let us know (something that already exists in Firefox). And if we access content that no longer exists, we suggest accessing the cached copy on Google or search keywords.

Descargando un fichero con ChromeThe file downloads are handled in the bottom bar with nice looking buttons. The files are saved in the folder "Downloads", under "My Documents", but this route can be changed at will.

Press "Show all downloads" opens a browser tab with the occurrence of the history of all downloaded files. Overall Chrome tries to avoid the proliferation of windows and dialog boxes, encouraging the use of local sites, a choice that increases the usability of the whole.

Is it worth switching to Google Chrome? It depends. If you prefer a browser more customizable, with add-ons and skins, the clear choice is Firefox. If on the other hand we value performance, Chrome with gold rises. The choice is yours.
